Popular Science Book Club
What are we reading this month?
|
|
Our next meeting is on For Love of Insects by Thomas Eisner |
Here are links to more information about the Current Book, about Future Books we're planning to read, and about Past Books we've read.
Some basic information:
- Who we are: Mostly UBC faculty and grad students from various departments.
-
Why we meet: We enjoy reading and talking about popular science books. We would like to spread the word, and to develop ways to encourage our students to enjoy these books too.
-
What we read: We're quite open-minded; we interpret popular science as any non-fiction with some scientific content.
-
When we meet: One Monday each month, at 5:00pm.
-
Where we meet: Room 1124 of the Biological Sciences Building.
-
What happens at our meetings? We sit around and talk about the book, we eat snacks, often ones suggested by the book and brought by the person who is hosting, we drink wine, beer and juice from our Italian bistro glasses.
-
How to join our email list: We have an official email listserv. To get on (or off), send an email to "popsci-request at zoology.ubc.ca" with the word "subscribe" (or "unsubscribe") as the subject line. (I've replaced the @ sign in the email addresses to make it harder for spammers to steal them.)
-
How to contact us: You can reach everyone on the email list by sending your email to "popsci at zoology.ubc.ca".
-
Everyone is welcome.: This group is not just for faculty. Students (yes, undergrads too), post-docs, and staff are all welcome. And you need not be a scientist - poets and philosophers would be wonderful additions to our mix.

What's this "wiki" for, and how do I use it? This will not be self-evident to most people, as superficially it just looks like a very boring Webpage. But the whole idea of a wiki is "communal authorship" where anyone can edit anything, hopefully making it better. So if you'd like to add an idea or an opinion, just click on the "Edit" tab at the top of any page. You can make edits or additions to the text, and format things using the toolbar that should load at the top. Scroll down to find the 'submit' button. You can add new pages by using the "add child page" button at the bottom.
